Once a Laker, Always a Laker: Building a Future of Possibilities at Shakamak

MSD of Shakamak is bringing its PreK–12 educators together to connect student belonging, meaningful learning, and opportunities beyond graduation.

“Once a Laker, Always a Laker.”

At MSD of Shakamak, those words speak to a sense of community and belonging that extends well beyond the classroom. Now, as the district looks toward the future, that same commitment to its students is helping shape a more connected approach to learning and life after graduation.

Under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Jacinda Smith, Shakamak has established a 2026–2029 strategic plan focused on strengthening student learning, expanding opportunities and graduate readiness, and building shared responsibility across its school community. A central priority is developing academic, career, and life-ready skills from kindergarten through graduation, ensuring students have opportunities to explore their interests, discover their strengths, and make informed decisions about their futures.

On October 9, Shakamak took an important step toward that vision, bringing together approximately 62 educators from preschool through high school to launch its partnership with Southern Indiana Education Center (SIEC) through Career Connected School Certification.

The afternoon brought educators across grade levels together to consider the experiences that shape a student's journey through school. Through hands-on activities and conversations, teachers explored how students discover their interests, recognize their strengths, and connect what they learn to the world around them.

For Shakamak, this work is about building on what already makes the district strong while creating more intentional connections across its PreK–12 system.

Student belonging is an important part of that effort. When students feel known, valued, and connected to their school community, they have a foundation for discovering their interests, building confidence, and exploring new opportunities. Whether it's a young student who enjoys solving problems, a middle schooler discovering a new interest, or a high school senior considering their next steps, every student benefits from educators who recognize their strengths and help them see what is possible.

Shakamak's strategic plan calls for a K–12 Profile of a Graduate, expanded learning experiences, and greater student choice. Through its partnership with SIEC, the district will work to connect those priorities with everyday classroom experiences, career exploration, student voice, and opportunities to learn beyond the classroom.

Throughout the school year, SIEC will work alongside Shakamak's district leaders and educators to build on existing strengths, listen to student perspectives, and support practical, sustainable approaches across grade levels as the district progresses toward certification.

What makes Shakamak's approach meaningful is the shared commitment behind it. Preparing students for the future isn't reserved for high school counselors, career coaches, or teachers of particular subjects. Every educator contributes to the experiences that help students understand themselves, develop a sense of purpose, and recognize opportunities for their lives.

For a school community that proudly says, “Once a Laker, Always a Laker,” preparing students for the future means helping them carry more than academic knowledge beyond graduation. It means ensuring they leave with a strong understanding of who they are, confidence in what they can contribute, and the ability to recognize the opportunities ahead.

That's a future worth building together.

Southern Indiana Education Center is proud to partner with MSD of Shakamak on its journey toward Career Connected School Certification.
