About the event

SIEC is hosting the hybrid event Guardrails to Greenlights: A District Playbook for AI Policy and Planning on October 31, 2025 at 9:30am-3:30pm ET.

Description:

District AI Champions face the dual challenge of knowing when to hit the brakes and when to step on the gas. This workshop provides practical guidance on setting the right guardrails for safety, compliance, and trust—while also identifying the greenlights where districts can responsibly accelerate innovation.

We will build on the language and structure of CoSN’s Generative AI Maturity Model, Teach AI’s Guidance Toolkit and Digital Promise’s AI literacy Framework to help participants understand the “why” behind AI adoption and apply it to their own district’s operational and instructional realities.

This event is considered “Hybrid.” You will join a room of school staff from districts across our region to engage in activities and discussions guided by an on-site facilitator. Meanwhile, the presenter will participate virtually, sharing their expertise and leading coordinated activities with multiple locations across Indiana. This format provides access to high-quality presenters who might not otherwise be available in person.

Agenda:

Through a mix of virtual spark sessions and on-site team activities, participants will:

  • Frame the why: connect AI to mission, student success, and operational excellence based on national best practice and frameworks.

  • Explore key guardrail areas: privacy, security, data governance, wellbeing and ethical use.

  • Identify greenlight opportunities in both the classroom and core operations (transportation, HR, finance, communications, facilities).

  • Work through tabletop scenarios that surface real-world risks, decisions, and opportunities.

  • Practice communication strategies to explain guardrails and greenlights clearly to staff, families, and boards.

The result for the day will be a practical playbook for the next mile: shared language, tested activities, and editable tools that district leaders can immediately use to guide conversations, set boundaries, and unlock opportunities.
