PD Slice/Session 1: An Introduction
Participants will….
Define the Science of Reading (SoR) and explore the current state in Indiana.
Review the simple view of reading and the Scarborough reading rope.
Learn about 4 key recommendations to promote reading for students in grades 3-9.
Session 2: A Deeper Dive into Recommendation 1
Building students’ decoding skills so they can read multisyllabic words.
Participants will….
Briefly review the content presented previously in the series.
Learn about determining which students might need support with sound/letter relationships.
Understand the role phonemic awareness and phonics play in reading growth.
Explore ways to teach a routine to decode multisyllabic words.
Think about ways to embed spelling into lessons.
Discuss ways to engage students in opportunities to read multisyllabic words on a routine basis.
Session 3: A Deeper Dive into Recommendation 2
Provide purposeful fluency-building activities to help students read effortlessly.
Participants will…
Briefly review the content presented previously in the series.
Understand what fluency is and why it is important.
Walk through examples of ways to build fluency with middle-grade readers.
Think about ways to access fluency and give meaningful feedback to readers.
Session 4: A Deeper Dive into Recommendation 3
Routinely use a set of comprehension-building practices to help students make sense of the text.
Participants will…
Briefly review the content presented previously in the series.
Understand the importance of both word and world knowledge in reading comprehension.
Step through the process of creating opportunities for students to use comprehension-building practices.
Practice planning a lesson for students involving comprehension-building practices.
Session 5: A Deeper Dive into Recommendation 4
Provide students with opportunities to practice making sense of stretch text (i.e. challenging text) that will expose them to complex ideas and information.
Participants will…
Briefly review the content presented previously in the series.
Understand why stretching students with complex text is important.
Decide which text, the purpose, and how much scaffolding students will need.
Bring it all together by exploring ways to encourage reading.
