New Zealand lies in the South Pacific about 1,000 miles to the east of Australia. It has two main islands, North Island and South Island being separated by Cook Strait with various smaller islands surrounding the larger islands. North Island contains hot springs and geysers and most of the countries' population. The South Island is more mountainous and is sparsely populated.

Wellington is the capital city located on the southern tip of North Island. New Zealand is part of the Pacific Rim countries. The climate is temperate and damp with the average temperature around 54 degrees F. It is always windy on both islands. There are extreme differences in climates between the two islands. The northern part of the North Island is almost subtropical with the southern part of the South Island being wintery.

New Zealand's main attraction is the scenery. The landscape is relative unspoiled and offers the most varied in the world. The scenery varies from mountains, fjords, lakes, glaciers, rainforest, beaches, and geysers. New Zealand is the world's largest exporter of wool, cheese, butter and meat. Its main resource is its rich pasture lands resulting from the rainfall throughout the year. Kiwi fruit and fishing are now a thriving export. New Zealand has a wealth of natural resources including coal, oil, natural gas and hydroelectric potential.
