Library Information

Our library is for elementary students in Kindergarten through Third Grade. The collection contains approximately 5,000 volumes with most being picture books and easy to read fiction. We are not automated at this time. Future plans are for automation and an Online Catalog. The Library has 6 networked computers with Internet access. The students in grades 1-3 come to the library for a 40 minute period once every 4 days. Kindergarten students come for a 20 minute period once a week. The librarian also teaches art classes in the morning. All library classes are conducted in the afternoons from 12:00 to 3:00, with the library being available 8:00-3:00 for us by students and teachers.

Mission Statement
  1. to promote the love of reading by exposing students to quality literature
  2. to promote information literacy in all students
  3. to encourage students to become lifelong learners
  4. to create an inviting and organized library that can meet the needs of students and teachers.
It is hopefully that this library can achieve these goals through integrating information skills into the library curriculm. This will be done by collaborating with teachers in this school and other classrooms around the world in designing, teaching, developing, and sharing meaningful lessons and projects. This collaboration will encourage students to seek information from traditional print, non-print, and electronic sources and share their projects and products through these same resources. The Library Link Web Site will be instrumental in sharing this process with classrooms within our school and classrooms around the world.

Information Literacy

The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of American Library Association (ALA), has designed and are promoting new standards of Information Literacy for kindergarten through twelfth grades. They are designed to help students acquire skills for the Information Age of the 21st Century.
Knowing where to find, how to obtain, and how to use information properly is essential for students to success in school and in the workplace of tomorrow. There are three main content areas: Information Literacy, Independent Learning, and Social Responsibility. These are available in detail at the ALA web site.
The Literacy Standards are summarizied as follows:
  1. The information literate student accesses information efficiently, effectively, and independently.
  2. The information literate student is able to critically evaluate information.
  3. The information literate student is one who uses information to meet his or her academic and personal needs and interests.
  4. The information literate student appreciates and uses on a daily basis literature and other creative expressions of communication.
  5. The information literate student is a lifelong learner who explores information to meet personal needs.
