Moon Tree Day
Our Moon Tree needed a new sign to commemorate its origin and planting. Our Cannelton Elementary Media club decided to raise the money to have a new sign made. It is made of wood and carved with this message:
Moon Tree
This Sycamore was grown from a
seed that traveled to the
Moon and back on
Apollo I4 January 1971
Presented to Camp Koch in 1976
Rededicated April 10, 2003

Students await the
ceremony. |
Our whole elementary school was present along with several parents, and other visitors.
A representative group of Cannelton Girl Scouts had a flag ceremony and led us all in the Pledge of Allegiance.
We had special speakers at our ceremony that day. Mr. Tom Thake, US Forestry, spoke to us all about the importance of trees and forests. Dr. Dave Williams, NASA Scientist, spoke to us of the search for all of the Moon Trees. Lt. Col. Christopher Roosa, son of Astronaut Stuart Roosa (who took the tree seeds up with him on Apollo 14), spoke to us about his father's love of trees and forests and his purpose for the Moon Tree project. He also read a letter to us written by his brother, Lt. Col. Jack Roosa, which told us of his good wishes for our tree and our ceremony.
Then we dedicated the new sign to the tree. It was a beautiful ceremony. We wish to thank everyone who helped to make this day so special! LONG LIVE OUR BEAUTIFUL MOON TREE!
