Nissho Elementary School

Students at Nissho Elementary are ready to learn!

Nissho (Nissyo) Elementary School
Asahikawa City

Our first school visit was great!  We went to Nissho Elementary School in Asahikawa. We observed students in many different grades and subjects. We found that the students at this school are taught English quite a bit. This is a very progressive school in my opinion.  The students are given lots of support and work collaboratively. The students and staff were very welcoming and friendly. Below are some highlights from the visit.

As we were walking into the school we saw a welcome sign. We changed our shoes into inside shoes and proceeded to the reception room.

As we entered we were impressed by how colorful and inviting the school was. I also felt it was very organized and clean.

The first classroom my group visited was a first grade class. These students were having a reading lesson and were very respectful to their teacher and were quite attentive.

The classroom was colorfully decorated and very conducive to learning!

A student is working very hard on her writing.

I especially enjoyed visiting this music class. The teacher was very energetic and kept every student actively engaged. I like the portable keyboards...the students blow into the tube on the side as they play to make the sounds. Click here to listen to a bit of their music lesson!

These fourth grade boys are presenting their project on recycling to their class.

Today the fire department came and talked to the whole school about fire safety and demonstrated how to use fire extinguishers. Here you see a sixth grader trying one out.

For lunch we were divided into grade level groups. I was able to eat with a sixth grade class. The students made me feel very much at home.

Our meal included a meat/vegetable patty, rice, soup, a fruit, and milk. I enjoyed using my chopsticks and having the students show me over and over how to hold them.

The students clean the school building every day!  They also help with serving lunch, and they are in charge of the clean up of lunch as well. They make sure everyone recycles their milk cartons and sorts their garbage.

During the course of the day we met and discussed educational policies with the teachers. It was great to be able to have this time to exchange ideas.  We had a translator with us, however, several of these teachers could speak and understand English.

Nissho Elementary school is a wonderful school!  We hope to keep in contact with these fine educators!
